Move to thwart war trials

Radicals and fundamentalists have fastened on the National Women Development Policy 2008 to divert public demand for trial of war criminals. A round table organised by Mohila Parishad and Saptahik 2000 was held at the National Press Club Mar. 17. Rasheda Chowdhury, women and children affairs adviser, expressed alarm at the spread of fundamentalists, who bring up religious issues whenever women affairs are discussed. They brought out several illegal processions; mainly to protest against unfounded rumours that the new women’s policy violated the Sharia Law on women’s inheritance rights (or lack of them). Govt. took no action against the protestors and remained silent over the protests.
