Another RMG rampage
About 40 vehicles were vandalised and 30 people were injured, including seven police, in clashes between garment workers and law enforcers in Malibagh area on Sept. 20. Workers of Islam Dresses Ltd. demanded Eid bonus based on 100% of basic pay, while the employer was only willing to give 25% like last year. The BGMEA deplored the violence and said it is not mandatory for the employers to pay any bonus, but the workers said they had agree to pay 100% this year and then reneged on their promise. That is why the workers took to the streets and they began violence only when attacked by the police.
